Amongst the many temples in Braj is this divine place called Paawan Sarovar in Nandgaon that appeals pilgrims for its peace-giving ambiance and tranquility. Paawan Sarovar is a lake that lies north to Nandgaon while descending from the Nandiswar hill. Located on the highway road to Kamavan, Paawan Sarovar is believed to be the soul-purifying lake that relieves a person from all his sins.

Mystical stories of construction:

The divine Paawan Sarovar lake was constructed by Vishakha’s father named ‘ Paavan Gopa’, thus comes the name of the Sarovar. Vishakha was one of the two best friends of Shri Radha rani, the other being Vishakha. The literal meaning of ‘Paawan Sarovar‘ is ‘purifying lake ‘. This lake is considered to be the purest and most sanctifying than any other holy water body.

Soul-purifying Sarovar:

The story behind the Paawan Sarovar justifies the relevance and importance of this lake amongst Hindu pilgrims. It is believed that Shri Krishna along with his friends used to bring his cows here in the evening while returning from the pastures. The cows after grazing the green grass used to drink water from the Paawan Sarovar and then returned to their cowsheds.
According to the legends, once Shri Krishna’s father Nand Maharaj Ji wanted to visit ‘ Sangam tirtha’ Prayagraja. He wanted to take a sacred bath in the confluence of the three sacred rivers Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. Shri Krishna did not want to get separated from his parents, so he requested his father to travel on the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya that happened to be the next day then. But on Akshay Tritiya, Nand Maharaj was amazed to see that that King Prayagraja had himself come to take a sacred bath in Paawan Sarovar. After knowing the sanctity of Paawan Sarovar, Nand Maharaj dropped his plan of visiting Sangam and took a holy dip in the Sarovar itself.

Other major attractions:

Pilgrims also come here to visit the seat of Mahaprabhuvallabh Acharya here. Also on the northern bank of the lake, there is a temple ‘Paawan Bihari’.  The ritual of taking a holy dip in the lake by pilgrims is still followed by the temple visit. Even today pilgrims come on the auspicious occasion of Akshay Tritiya and take a holy dip in this lake and sanctify their soul to attain salvation.
